My musical tastes aren’t very broad. I know folks who have thousands and thousands of songs on the IPOD and they can name me bands that I’ve never heard of. This was on display last week as two guys went back and forth talking about music I never knew existed and they acted as though it was simply common knowledge on the same level as the alphabet.
With that said, I like words. I’m a fan of words. Not necessarily big on the varying tune that goes with them, but definitely a fan of lyrics. Casting Crowns LifeSong is in our van and has been for about a year. I know that they are so mainstream, and so overplayed, and so vanilla - blah blah blah. But here’s the thing, there are words that captivate me. In their song “In Me”, two lines in particular have a hold on me right now, especially as I am sharing with people about Eternity.
How refreshing to know you don’t need me
How amazing to find that you want me
There have been significant periods of time in my life as a Christian, and I think it is my default mode, to live as though God needs me. How in the world is the creator of the universe ever going to get anything done if I don’t do something and do it big. God can’t possibly accomplish His purposes without SuperMarc as His trusty sidekick. He needs me. He can’t possibly handle all this on His own. He’s got to have my wisdom alongside to fully complete all the great things He has intended.
I might not think that way overtly, but I know in the depths of my soul that I live that way and act that way. But the flip side of that is how amazing it is to find that He wants me. He chose me. He called me. He loves me. He pays attention to me. He knows me. He sees me. He hears me. He cares for me. He protects me. He intercedes for me. He strengthens me. He disciplines me. He holds me. He searches for ways to do me good. He fulfills me. He gives me purpose. He orders my path. He knows the hairs on my head. He knit me together in my mother’s womb.
In short, I am His child. God doesn’t need a child. God wants a child. How amazing!
