I ordered this book with the express purpose of giving it to a couple who are currently not following Jesus or involved in church anywhere here in the Jefferson City area. Before I gave it to them, I wanted to peruse it myself and I’m glad I did.
This is from the “A Book You Will Read” series that RE:LIT (the publishing arm of The Resurgence) has come out with and is intended for the very purpose for which I ordered it.
It’s free of big words or even if big words are used, they are explained which is what I really like about Mark Driscoll. It’s designed to be read in about an hour and is really a good 45,000 ft view of who God is. It’s about 70 pages of reading with some nice appendices that point the reader to additional resources to continue the journey.
Overall, I like it and the writing matches the purpose of the book. We’ll add it to the Nomad page at Eternity and potentially make this a part of our visitor packets as well. I’ll finish with a couple good paragraphs:
In God we trust–that’s what our money says. However, if you were to randomly ask the people handing their money to the checkout clerk in your local grocery store, “Who Is God?” it is doubtful they would be able to clearly articulate who this God is. Our predicament is not unlike the experiences of Paul when he walked into the great city of Athens only to discover that it was littered with memorials to an unknown god…..
In many ways, much of our culture is very Athenian. Most people believe in God but, like the Athenians, they are uncertain who God is or how to come to any informed certainty. My hope is that this little book will help fill a need somewhat like Paul did on Mars Hill, though admittedly without the same degree of authority since this little book will never make it into the Bible.
